As :iconguen20: had asked if there was a place where people could suggest fairy tales to read I figured we should have a journal entry on it since we don't have a chat room (if you  donations towards the group here ---> [link] and these can be used towards awards to contest winners/making the group a super group, this means a chat room can happen (you can specify)).
I personally love all the original tales like Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White and Rose Red. But I also love retellings such as "Beauty" and "Spindle's End" both by Robin McKinley. What are your favorite original fairy tales (both famous and not so famous) as well as your favorite retellings?

Not sure what exactly this will be called in English, German is: "Von einem der auszog das Fürchten zu lernen" ("The one who went to learn to be frightened").

My favorite book growing up was a hard cover collection of both Grimm's and Anderson's fairy tales. As you can imagine, it was very thick and the pages were tissue thin. I was more of a Grimm child by the way although now I appreciate the genius and variety of Anderson.

But I also adored children's books like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll's tales are wonderfully imaginative and Alice is the first strong female heroine. I adore the fact that the original story isn't a love story and has nothing to do with a princess!

I also harbored a tremendous fondness for Peter Pan, Charlotte's Web and the films Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz.

I vote for Moomingtrolls, they are the best! But there are also other good stories. Does anyone remember "Lurituri", for example? I can't recall author's name now (she was from Scandinavia, I think). Lurituri was a gnome.

Not too many people know it, but 'The Raven' is an interesting fairytale written by the Brothers Grimm. (and don't confuse it with E.A. Poe's 'The Raven' they're two completely different ravens).

The White Cat is probably my favorite 'original' fairytale, but my absolute favorite fairytale is "The Ordinary Princess" by M.M. Kaye. Other really good fairytales are "The Light Princess" and "The Princess and The Goblins" , both by George MacDonald, "The Rose and the Ring" by William M. Thackeray, and lastly "The Ugly Duckling" play by A.A.Milne.
